Reducing Seabird Bycatch: An Alaskan Success Story
About the Speaker
Rob has spent the majority of his career studying seabirds. While an Associate Research Professor at Oregon State University, he started the Seabird Oceanography Lab where his team studied seabird ecology, population dynamics, and conservation. His research on Short-tailed Albatrosses connected him to a network of collaborators from throughout the Pacific Ocean to enhance recovery of this endangered bird. Now in Juneau, Rob leads an ecosystems studies program for NOAA’s Alaska Fisheries Science Center at the Auke Bay Laboratories with a focus on recruitment and population dynamics of commercially important fish species. Rob is also science lead for the Gulf Watch Alaska Long-Term Research and Monitoring Program, co-lead of the newly established Northern Bering Sea Integrated Ecosystem Research Program, and serves on the Scientific and Statistical Committee for the North Pacific Fishery Management Council. Rob received a Ph.D. from Oregon State University, a M.S. from Moss Landing Marine Laboratories, and a B.S. from Humboldt State University. When not at work, Rob enjoys time with family and friends and any outdoor adventure, but especially boating, fishing, mountain biking, and hiking.
